The Guardian's Best Children's Books of 2015
Candy Gourlay selects The Safest Lie as her favorite book of the year: If I had to pick the book that made me go wow in 2015 (and note that I probably read one book a week!), it would have to be The Safest Lie by Angela Cerrito. I started reading The Safest Lie with dread because you know, Holocaust stories never end well even when they end well. Also, Angela Cerrito is a dear friend – and what if I didn’t like it? Well, I didn’t just like it, I was swept away by its great big throbbing heart and the portrayal of hope and goodness shining so brightly during a bad, bad time. This is the only middle grade Holocaust book I’ve read that I would say is perfectly pitched for its audience. See the rest of Candy's comments and The Guardian's Full List.
NOTE: On Facebook, Candy Gourlay commented, "My original gushing text for the Guardian was edited to remove my mention of books that deserve to be discovered - the lyrical and magical OY YEW by Ana Salote and the beyond special picture book THE UNSTOPPABLE MAGGIE MCGEE by Juliet Clare Bell and Dave Gray."

Project MUSE
Jan 2016: Bulletin of the Center for Children's Books Recommends The Safest Lie!
Anna, brave and serious, makes a compelling heroine; her narration shows her sadness, confusion, and fear in a way that reveals her strength of character. Full of feeling and insight, as well as fascinating detail, this novel is as much about the loss of identity as the loss of life. Give this to those history buffs ready for a powerful story less commonly told. Read Full Review
